What is nanocellulose?
Cellulose is the fibre that gives structure to plants, bacteria, algae, and tunicates (sea squirts, salps, and larvaceans). It is the most abundant natural material on Earth.
Nanocellulose is that same fibre, broken down until it is roughly a thousand times thinner than a human hair: just 1–100 nanometres wide. At that scale the fibres lock water into a soft, stable scaffold: a gel that is biocompatible, durable, and completely animal-free.
Why do we choose nanocellulose?
Nanocellulose stands on 170 years of research, and a wood-based nanocellulose device has already reached patients.
Why is Finnish birch the best raw material?
Nordic birch gives dense, strong, uniform fibres, providing the batch-to-batch reliability a medical device demands.
Birch nanocellulose has also been developed for medical use for 15+ years, de-risking it as a source before we begin.
Finnaly, it is a renewable material from Finland, Europe's most forested country, ensuring that no petrochemicals is in the chain.
